The Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC) provides a federal guarantee for eligible deposits. For TFSA accounts, coverage is limited to $100,000 CAD per member institution, encompassing both principal and accrued interest. This protection is distinct from other categories, such as RRSPs or non-registered accounts.
Technical Note
Instruments with maturities exceeding five years were previously excluded but are now eligible for coverage under updated regulatory amendments.
Investors must verify that their chosen Guaranteed Investment Certificates (GIC) are issued by a CDIC member. If a deposit exceeds the $100,000 threshold within a single institution, the surplus remains exposed to institutional insolvency risks.
